Lalpur (Natore) Correspondent: Protest marches and road blockades have erupted demanding the cancellation of Barrister Farzana Sharmin Putul’s nomination for the upcoming National Parliament elections in Natore-1 (Lalpur–Bagatipara) constituency.
On November 3, the BNP announced Natore District BNP Joint Secretary Barrister Farzana Sharmin Putul — daughter of late Fazlur Rahman Patol, former State Minister for Youth and Sports — as its candidate for the seat.
Immediately after the announcement, supporters of Putul reportedly attacked and injured the elder son of former Lalpur Upazila BNP convener Dr. Yasir Arshad Rajan, who is a leader of the BNP’s student wing. Later, Putul’s opponents blocked the Natore–Pabna highway at Kadimchilan, burned tires, and obstructed traffic. Police from Lalpur Station arrived around 10 pm and cleared the blockade.
On Tuesday, supporters of Dr. Rajan brought out protest marches in Lalpur and Gopalpur, demanding the cancellation of Putul’s nomination and seeking Rajan’s nomination instead. The following day, supporters of BNP Central Committee Deputy Secretary Taiful Islam Tipu held another demonstration calling for Tipu’s nomination in place of Putul’s.
