Heavily criticising the recent comments of BNP leaders on the generosity showed by the Prime Minister regarding the release of the BNP chief Begum Zia, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said Sunday their comments (BNP leaders)seem that convicted accused Begum Zia would better stay in jail, reports BSS.

“The Prime Minister released Begum Khaleda Zia for six months exercising her power conferred on her under CRPC (Penal Code) and later she (the Premier) extended it for another six months by showing her generosity,” the information minister told the newsmen at a press briefing at the seminar room of his ministry at Secretariat.

Hasan said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir needed to express gratitude on behalf of his party to the Prime Minister for her generosity as Begum Zia is a convicted accused and she didn’t get bail from the court.

But, the information minister said, the way they are talking, it seems that it would have been better not to show the generosity by the Prime Minister.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hasshown her unprecedented generosity by extending Begum Khaleda Zia’s release from jail. Even after the release of Begum Zia, the people might have demanded that she (Begum Zia) would be sent back to jail due to the comments of the BNP leaders, the information minister said.

Replying to another query on the comments of BNP leader RuhulKabir Rizvi, the information minister said BNP has grown through the politics of killing. BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman captured the power through the politics of killing and formed the party by offering leftovers of power to many, said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.

He said Ziaur Rahman killed hundreds of army soldiers and leaders and workers of Awami League and its associate bodies to consolidate his power.

Begum Zia is also continuing the same trend of killing, he said, adding that gruesome grenade attacks were carried out to kill Bangabandhu’s daughter and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 21, 2004 at the behest of Begum Khaleda Zia and under the direction of her son Tarique Rahman.

Besides, the information minister said, Ziaur Rahman was involved in the assassination of Bangabandhu. For this, speeches of present BNP leaders don’t befit them as their (BNP leaders) upbringing has gone through the politics of killing and they do politics of killing and have carried out bomb attacks. Actually, the politics of killing is their main objective, he added.

In the beginning, the information minister expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death Moulana Ahmed Shafi and said he was born in his (Hasan) electoral area and his neighbouring union as well. His popularity and standing as a respected Islamic scholarat far and wide has been clearly manifested from his janaza, he added.

About the unstable situation in the HathazariMadrasa, Hasan said it is their internal matter and it is normal that the issue created mental pressure on him as he was the director general of the madrasa for long.

About future leadership of Hefazat-e-Islam, the information minister said it is their internal matter and added ‘I don’t want to talk about this.”

Replying to another query on reopening of cinema halls, the information minister said there was a demand from hall owners, directors and producers to reopen the cinema halls. “I held a meeting with them at the beginning of this month. We will sit again before taking any decision about this issue soon,” Hasan added.
