BNP leader Shahadat made CCC mayor

The Election Tribunal in Chattogram on Tuesday declared former BNP city unit president Dr Shahadat Hossain as the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) in a case filed by him seeking cancellation of 2021 election result.

Election Tribunal judge as well as Joint District and session judge Mohammad Khairul Amin delivered the verdict this noon.

The court also directed the election commission secretary to publish a gazette within next 10 days.

 Dr Shahadat Hossain filed the case seeking cancellation of the CCC election results, which declared Awami League nominated candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury as the winner.

Dr Shahdat, former BNP nominated mayoral candidate of CCC election filed the case on February 24, 2021 for widespread electoral fraud and several others of rigging the polls.

 Dr Shahdat alleged   that CCC officials started coordinating with Rezaul after he got  Awami League’s nomination, suggesting that the election was merely a formality.

On the Election Day, only four to six percent voters were counted by noon, though official figures showed 22 percent of votes were cast.

Court sources said the election was held on January 27, 2021, Awami League candidate  Rezaul Karim Chowdhury won by securing  3,69,248 votes. In that election, his nearest rival BNP's mayoral candidate Shahadat Hossain got 52,489 votes.

Advocate Arshad Hossain said the court declared Dr Shahadat as the CCC mayor after examining all the evidence and witnesses.

Apart from that the court also ordered the authorities concerned to publish a gazette in this regard within 10 days."

Earlier, the mayoral candidate Dr. Shahadat Hossain filed a case against nine people including the Election Commissioner on February 24, 2021.
