A BNP leader was detained with a foreign pistol and ammunition from Mirzaganj uapzila of Patuakhali on Thursday.
The arrestee was identified as Md Jahagir Farazi, son of Motaleb Farazi, resident of Mirzagabj upazila. He is the general secretary of Mirzaganj upazila BNP.
Captain Riman Rafin Nishat confirmed the matter, saying Jahagir Farazi was detained from his house in Uttar Subidkhal area in Mirzaganj upazila on early Thursday.
He said acting on intelligence information, an joint drive by Army and police was carried out, and the house of Mohammad Jahangir Faraji was searched. During the search, a state-of-the-art 7.65mm pistol, a magazine, and two rounds of ammunition, all made in the United States, were found carefully hidden in two separate rooms of the house.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirzaganj police station said preparations are underway to file a case against the arrested Jahangir Faraji under the Arms Act.
The OC also said that the operation was conducted under the leadership of Captain Riman Rafin Nishat, the Camp Commander of the Mirzganj Upazila Army Camp.
