BNP-Jamaat’s arson attacks continue

BNP-Jammat caders allegedly torched a passenger bus in Shanir Akhra area of the capital Dhaka on Monday evening.

They torched a Manzil Paribahan bus at around 6:15pm. 

Ershad Hossain, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room confirmed it.

Getting the  information, two units of fire service rushed to the spot and doused the blaze, he added.

Fourteen reports of arson attacks were recorded across the country from 6 am Sunday till 6:30 pm Monday, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Of these, eight arson attacks were reported in Dhaka city, three in Dhaka division (Narayanganj, Savar, Faridpur), one each in Barishal division, Rajshahi division and Rangpur division, said Talha Bin Zashim, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defense Media Cell on Monday.

A total of eleven buses, two human haulers and one truck were burned during this period.

Meanwhile, the anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday arrested a Chhatra Dal leader while he was trying to set fire to a bus in Dhaka's Abdullahpur area. 

RAB-1 Superintendent of Police Zahidur Rahman confirmed it.

The incident took place around 9:15am on Monday.

The arrestee was identified as Mamun Majumder, 35, assistant organizing secretary of the Chhatra Dal central committee. 

The RAB official said two men got into a bus of Prajapati Paribahan from Abdullahpur, disguised as passengers. 

The two then tried to set the bus on fire and escape. However, RAB members who were nearby chased them and arrested one of them.

Altogether 189 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh were deployed across Bangladesh on Monday to prevent any untoward situations surrounding the BNP’s fourth blockade and ensure security at garment factories.

Among them 25 platoons had been positioned in Dhaka and adjacent areas, BGB Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam said.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and it’s radical alliance  Jamaat-e-Islami again  announced a fresh 48-hour nationwide blockade for Wednesday and Thursday.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at a virtual press briefing on Monday.

The Jamaat-e-Islami also issued a press release, signed by its acting secretary general ATM Masum, with the blockade announcement on Monday.
