Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said the BNP is the father of distortion of the country’s history as it continued a failed attempt to make the footnote of history, Ziaur Rahman, a hero.

He made the remark while speaking at a press conference on contemporary issues at his official residence in the capital. Responding an allegation raised by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Quader said the Fakhrul’s allegation was “absolute untrue and baseless one and nothing but a crazy delirium”.

Claiming that the AL never distorted the history, he said the BNP gets irritated as the AL has presented the real history before the nation.

The AL general secretary said the name of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose leadership the Bangalee nation's long-cherished independence was achieved, was banned during the BNP era.

The BNP banned the ‘Joy Bangla Slogan’ of the Liberation War and stopped broadcasting the historic March 7 speech.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said attempts were made to erase the Bangabandhu’s name from all places - from media to textbooks.

The BNP has resumed the heinous practice of history distortion, he added.

He said the BNP leaders continue their ill-efforts to make its chairperson Khaleda Zia the first woman freedom fighter of the country and convicted fugitive BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman a child freedom fighter.

That is why the country’s independence, sovereignty and history in the hand of the BNP, the AL general secretary said.

He said the history takes its own course and the BNP leaders may not know the universal truth.

The new generation is now able to know the real history of the country, while the faces of those who distorted history are being exposed, Quader said.

“So, the BNP gets desperate, has started the old game and is practicing the undemocratic path. But the people are alert now,” he said.

He said the country’s people will upsurge against the BNP if it tries to distort the history of the independence and destroy its values.

Noting that the people do not have confidence in the BNP, the road transport minister said they have turned away from the party due to its negative politics.

He said 50 years after freeing from the chain of subjugation; those who questioned about the achievements in the last 50 years did not bear the spirit of the independence in hearts.
