BNP in secret touch with AL

No way for BNP but to join poll for its existence

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) should learn from the mistakes of the past and join the 12th general election under the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led government as it does not have any option to boycott it scheduled to be held by early January 2024 according to Constitution.

Bangladesh Post on Saturday ran a story headlined ‘BNP in secret touch with AL’ saying during a recent meeting with Awami League’s (AL) Liaison Committee led by Matia Chowdhury, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that his party wants to keep the election option open as the party earlier had committed political blunders by boycotting elections in 2014 and 2018. This newspaper published a detailed report on it. A good sense starts prevailing upon the senior leaders of BNP. It was the BNP, which was responsible for creating the anarchic situation in the country that led to the declaration of emergency in January 11, 2007, popularly known as 1/11 changeover, has been criticised widely at home and abroad for its role in the country’s political arena.

Besides, the party’s violent activities during its rule or in opposition between 2001 and 2015 created panic among the people. As a result the party lost peoples’ confidence. So, the party’s high command and senior leaders will be working to regain public trust by taking part in the next general elections.

Country’s 12th national polls will be held by January 29, 2024. The maiden session of the 11th national parliament was held on January 23, 2019. The Election Commission (EC) has constitutional obligation to conduct the 12th national polls between November, 2023 and January 29, 2024.

There is no caretaker

 government anywhere

 in the world, except Pakistan

The elections will be held in the country like in other democratic countries across the globe. So, BNP leaders should take down the ghost of the caretaker government from their heads and participate in the elections by following the simple path as our EC is completely independent.

Elections will be held under the commission and the government only plays the role of facilitator during the time of polls. A poll-time government does not even have the power to transfer a police constable. During the polls, Bangladesh AL is a side in that election and in the same way BNP is also a side. So, all political parties must participate in elections under the commission. There is no caretaker government anywhere in the world, except Pakistan.

Therefore, it is a question why does BNP follow Pakistan too much. Caretaker government will not be restored in Bangladesh. Elections will be held in Bangladesh as like as all parliamentary democratic countries across the globe including India, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Continental European countries.

BNP joined the 2018 general elections amid hesitation while they torched 500 polling centers and killed several polling officers and many people in arson attacks in the name of resisting the elections of 2014. The people have no confidence in the leadership of BNP as the party’s leaders are frauds, once they get people’s votes, they do not take time to forget them. There is no public participation in the street march of BNP.

So, not only the ruling AL but also all political parties, including BNP, have the responsibility to extend cooperation in holding a participatory, free and fair election.

If any party boycotts elections or tries to thwart it, then the liability will go to the party making the election non-participatory or unacceptable.
