Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party is bringing in outsiders including ‘listed criminals’ ahead of the two city corporation polls of Dhaka. Obaidul, also the general secretary of Awami League, was addressing a press briefing on current issues at his Secretariat office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

He also requested the Election Commission to take into consideration of track records of the ‘criminals and outsiders’ and urged the law enforcers to keep them under surveillance for ensuring free, fair and credible city corporation polls. Quader said that the government and his party would extend all cooperation and supports in holding free and fair city elections.

In reply to a query whether coronavirus outbreak in China would hamper the progress of the Padma Bridge work, he said that over 1,000 Chinese workers were engaged in the construction work. Among them, in each shift, around 150 workers remained in leave. Those returning form leave were being kept in isolation for 14 days for observation. “And the situation in China is not hampering the Padma Bridge project,” Obaidul said.
