Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam has called for giving more importance to publishing research that benefits the country, science, and people. He said public funds for research and thesis grants should be properly utilized for the welfare of the nation.

He made these remarks while distributing Resident Thesis Grants to 549 residents pursuing higher medical education at BMU. The event was held at the university’s A Block auditorium on Tuesday, according to a press release.

Dr Shahinul Alam said, “Thesis grants and research funds should not go to waste. Public money must be spent in ways that benefit people. Our research must be focused and useful.”

He expressed concern over the current low rate of thesis publication and urged students and researchers to increase their efforts in publishing quality research. “The number of thesis publications is very low. This must be increased. At the same time, we should target publications in index journals, BMU journals, and BMDC-recognized journals,” he added.

The VC emphasized preparing medical students and professionals for quality medical education, services, and research. He noted that proper training and encouragement can improve the country’s position in global medical research.

BMU Pro-VC (Admin) Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, Treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhter, and Registrar Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam also spoke at the event. BMU Pro-VC (Research and Development) Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader presided over the programme.

Speakers at the event encouraged the residents to be dedicated to research and make meaningful contributions to the country’s healthcare sector through innovation and new knowledge.
