Ironsmiths are passing busy time in making slaughter knives and tools ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Adha at different markets across the capital city.
Visiting the capital’s Karwan Banzar, New Market, Gulshan DCC Market, Chawk Bazar and some other markets on Friday, this correspondent found that the smiths are busy in making the sharp-edged tools essential for slaughtering the sacrificial animals.
Sale of new machetes, choppers, knives and slaughter tools have also increased. People who have their own old slaughtering tools are also repairing them from the smiths’ workshops. While visiting the blacksmiths’ workshops at Karwan Bazar, this correspondent found the smiths were working non-stop and have no time to spare. They are making or sharpening machetes, knife, meat cleaver, carving knife, butter knife etc. which are used in various stages of slaughtering animals.
While talking to this correspondent some of the smiths said during this season they are to go through extra pressure comparing to the other days of the year. Ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha, each day they earn Tk 1000 to 1200, while their daily average earning is Tk 500 to 600 on the other days. Smiths informed that price of the knives varies on their size and quality. Price of a large size slaughter knife is between Tk 1500 to Tk 4000 while small size knives are sold at between Tk 300 to Tk 700. Some local brand knives are being sold based on their weight. Those are Tk 700 to Tk 900 per kilogram.
In the market, there are also good number of chopping board whose price is between Tk 500 to Tk 1500 each. Hand meat cutters are being sold at Tk 350 to Tk 600. There are also disinfectant and deodorant fluid available in the market whose price varied on quality from Tk 180 to Tk 600. Plastic mats are being sold at between Tk 300 to Tk 600.
