Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC)'s rent-based mill has created new employment opportunities through the commencement of production.

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, said the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation has started production activities under private management under the lease-based mill. These have created new employment opportunities for many.

He said this while inspecting the production activities of Bangladesh Jute Mills Ltd. at Palash in Narsingdi on Monday afternoon. Textile and Jute Secretary Md Abdur Rauf, Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner Abu Naeem Mohammad Maruf Khan and others were present during the visit.

The Minister said that already two jute mills (Bangladesh Jute Mills Ltd., Narsingdi and KFD Jute Mills Ltd., Chittagong) have been leased. The other two jute mills (Crescent Jute Mills Ltd., Khulna and Hafiz Jute Mills Ltd., Chittagong) have leased activities. The proposal has been received. The proposal evaluation committee has already submitted its evsaluation report to the BJMC.

He hoped that if it was possible to lease a few more mills at this stage, there would be employment opportunities for many new ones and in this case the terminated workers would get priority. It may be mentioned that the government has decided to stop the production of 25 state-owned jute mills under the control of BJMC from July 1, 2020 in order to find a lasting solution to the existing situation of jute mills and revive the jute sector.

About Tk 3,563 crore has been paid to all permanent workers of 25 jute mills through Golden Handshake facility including gratuity, PF, leave cashing. In addition, the Ministry and the Ministry of Finance are working hard to pay the arrears of verified transfer workers, arrears of permanent workers for case settlement, withdrawal, arrears of 64 weeks arrears during the mill period, gratuity of retired officers or employees and arrears of raw jute traders.
