‘Birth of children by surgery increases in the country’

The rates of cesarean delivery increased among slum, non-slum and urban women. This information has emerged from a study by the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT).

This information was announced at the third Urban Health Survey (UHS) 2021 results release ceremony organized by NIPORT at CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.

The study was conducted on slum population and non-slum population in 11 city corporations and remaining urban population of district municipalities and large cities where more than 45,000 people live.

Dhaka University (DU) Professor of Statistics Department Syed Shahadat Hossain and Begum Rokeya University’s former Vice-Chancellor Professor AKM Noor Un Nabi announced the results of the Bangladesh Urban Health Survey report. According to the study, 59.4 percent of the population outside the slums, 50.5 percent of the urban population and 31.3 percent of the slum children were born through surgery.

The survey covers married women (age 12 to 49 years), married men (age 15 to 54 years), children under five years of age and community leaders.

According to the survey, most of the total number of children treated in different hospitals or health care institutions are born through surgery. 77 percent of babies born in non-slum communities with access to health care are delivered by cesarean section. In addition, 75 percent of the urban population and 58.3 percent of the total births in the slums with access to health care are performed by cesarean section.

Niport Director General and Additional Secretary Md. Shahjahan presided over the programme while Health Minister Zahid Malek was the chief guest, the special guest was the secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr Anwar Hossain Howlader, Secretary of Health Education and Family Welfare Department Saiful Hasan Badal, Director General of Family Planning Directorate Shahan Ara Banu, Acting Director General of Health Education Directorate Professor Dr Tito Mia, Additional Director General of the Department of Health Professor Dr Ahmadul Kabir and others were present at the programme.
