Biman plane makes emergency landing in India

Pilot suffered heart attack, no casualties reported

A Dhaka bound passenger flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines has made an emergency landing Friday morning in Nagpur, India. 

The flight made an emergency landing as Captain Nowshad Ataul Qayyum of flight BG 022 had suffered a heart attack. However, all the passengers of the flight are safe.

While the flight was in air over Raipur of Chattisgarh in India, assuming the emergency situation the co-pilot made this emergency landing.  

However, the scheduled flight BG022 carrying 124 passengers on its way back to Dhaka from Muscat are safe, no causalities were reported.

In the emergency situation, Kolkata air traffic control (ATC) was contacted which asked the flight to make a medical emergency landing at Nagpur airport. Later the flight made an emergency landing at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport at 10:40 am local time. 

Later, the pilot Captain Nowshad Ataul Qayyum was taken to Hope Hospital and admitted to emergency ward. His health condition is gradually improving, confirmed Biman official. 

They further said that, the country manager of Biman’s Delhi office was sent to Nagpur to provide necessary assistance to passengers, crew and flights.

Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan said, “First pilot Captain Nowshad had a heart attack when they were in midair. However, the flight landed safely at Nagpur with no causalities. Another set of pilot and crew is proceeding to Nagpur to bring back the passengers and the crew.”

Biman information said, an eight-member rescue team had been sent to Nagpur on a scheduled flight at 6:45 pm on Friday. From there, BG022 flight with passengers is expected to arrive in Dhaka by the night.
