Legendary Bangladeshi footballer Bimal Kar has sadly passed away at the age of 89. A key figure in the country's independence movement, Kar breathed his last at Dhaka Central Military Hospital on Thursday.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Kar was a pivotal member of the independent football team, playing matches across India to raise funds for the cause. His contributions to the nation's freedom were immense.

Prior to his involvement in the Liberation War, Kar represented Azad Sporting in Dhaka. Post-independence, he returned to his hometown of Chattogram, where he continued to grace the football pitch for several clubs including Victoria and Wanderers.

Throughout his career, Kar earned a reputation for his exceptional skills and sportsmanship. He participated in numerous tournaments for the greater Noakhali and Feni districts, and later transitioned to refereeing, officiating matches under the Chittagong District Sports Association and BFF.

Born in Parashuram village, Feni district, on June 9, 1937, Kar was the second child of Rohini Kar and Hiranmoyi Kar. He is survived by his wife, one son, three daughters, grandchildren, and numerous well-wishers.

A guard of honour was held at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BAFFE) ground on Thursday afternoon, followed by Kar's cremation at Sri Sri Baradeswari Mahasmashan.
