It is encouraging to note that the government has devised a scheme to create more than 11.33 million new jobs in the next five years to ensure sustainable economic growth and recovery of losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As reported by this daily on Wednesday, in order to create jobs, the government is planning to attract foreign investments especially in the special economic zones by creating a business-friendly environment. Besides, the government will diversify labour markets to create employment.

Unemployment has long been a pressing issue in Bangladesh. There is no denying that Bangladesh has achieved remarkable economic growth over the last 10 years, but still, unemployment is recognised as one of the major problems hindering country's overall development.

We welcome the government's efforts to

create new jobs to recover the losses

caused by the pandemic

It needs no emphasising that hitherto employment opportunities are not available comparing the number of labour force entering the job market every year. Moreover, the unemployment rate has increased due to Covid-19 pandemic since March.

Reports show that currently the number of youths, who are not involved in employment, education and training, is more than 90 lakh. Considering the situation, youths should be encouraged to choose entrepreneurship over jobs.

It is necessary to adopt measures that will help people become self-employed to achieve a dignified life. We envisage that by creating entrepreneurs we can reduce the pressure on the country’s job markets and reinforce the country’s economic growth.

Entrepreneurship is inevitable for a country’s economic development and in order to encourage entrepreneurship, necessary steps should be taken to disseminate proper and need based education throughout the country.
