A Dhaka court has sentenced Bidisha Ershad, wife of former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a fraud case filed over alleged deception in the transfer of an apartment.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam delivered the verdict on Wednesday (May 20).
Complainant's lawyer Md. Hemayet Uddin Khan Hiron confirmed the matter, stating that the court also issued an arrest warrant along with a conviction warrant as the convict remains absconding. The court further imposed a fine of Tk 10,000.
According to the case statement, businessman Mosharraf Hossain Sikdar filed the case with Gulshan Police Station in 2008, alleging that he was defrauded under the pretext of selling an apartment at President Park in Baridhara. The court delivered the verdict after prolonged hearings and examination of witnesses.
When contacted for her reaction, Bidisha Ershad said she was not aware of the verdict.
