Naik Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) who was critically injured in a landmine explosion on the Bandarban border, has died after a 20-day battle for his life.

The soldier, who was serving with BGB Battalion-34 in Cox's Bazar, succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

The incident dates back to October 12, when a BGB patrol team was targeted in the Tombru border area of Naikhongchhari upazila. A landmine, allegedly planted by the Myanmar-based rebel group Arakan Army, detonated, severely injuring Naik Akhtar Hossain.

"The blast completely severed the heel of his left foot and severely injured his other leg," confirmed Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, Commander of BGB-34 Battalion.

Following initial treatment at the CMH in Ramu, the soldier was airlifted to the advanced facility in Dhaka on October 13 for better care. Despite efforts, he passed away at approximately 11:00 AM on Friday.

Lt. Col. Alam stated that the soldier's body has been kept at the CMH morgue in Dhaka. It will be sent by helicopter to his ancestral home in Bhola district on Saturday.
