Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a youth with 11 gold bars worth around Tk 1,61,00,000 from Lokkhidari border adjacent to Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira on Friday while they were being smuggled to India.
The youth was detained from Lokkhidari border adjacent to Bhomra Land Port in the Sadar upazila on early Friday.
The detainee was identified as Zakir Hossain, 31, son of Arijul Molla, resident of Lokkhidari village under Bhomra union in the Sadar upazila.
BGB said acting on a tip off that a large supply of gold is being smuggled to India from near main pillar 2 and sub-pillar 3, approximately 100 gauge inside Bangladesh, in Lokkhidari border under Bhomra Land Port border of Satkhira, a skilled team led by Bhomra BOP Habildar Shahidul Islam conducted a drive there. The smuggler Jakir was detained from there at that time. Later, 11 gold bars wrapped in a towel were recovered from his body. The seized gold bars weigh 1 kg 483 grams and 89 milligrams, the market price of which is Tk 1,60,70,500.
Commander of Satkhira BGB Battalion 33 Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashraful Haque confirmed the matter. He said the seized gold bars were handed over to Satkhira Treasury Office. The detained smuggler was handed over to the Sadar police station after filing a case with the police station in this connection, he added.
