BEZA plans to introduce BCP in economic zones

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is planning to introduce ‘Business continuity plan (BCP)’ in economic zones. 

As part of the initiative, a workshop on ‘Business continuity plan’ was held in a city hotel on Thursday (March 3), jointly organised by Programming Division of Bangladesh Planning Commission and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).

Representatives from different ministries, divisions and business associations participated in the workshop. 

Mohammad Erfan Sharif, executive member of BEZA, presided over the the event, while Nasima Begum, member at Socio-Economic Infrastructure Division of Planning Commission, addressed the workshop as the chief guest. 

Prof Rakib Ahsan, team leader for BCP consultants team, shared the working approaches of BCP. He mentioned that the BCP would improve business process and risk coverage along with maintaining business operations.

Khandker Ahsan Hossain, chief of Programming Division, Dr Nurun Nahar, joint chief and project director of NRP, and Sudipto Mukerjee, resident representative of UNDP Bangladesh, spoke at the workshop, among others. 

In her address, Nasima Begum emphasized on stakeholder engagement and sense of ownership in implementation of BCP. 

Sudipto Mukergee underscored the need for accuracy of data in risk analysis and suggested socialization of BCP. 

In his presidential address, Mohammad Erfan Sharif called for consideration of fourth industrial revolution related issues in formulating development plans.Planning Commission is supporting BEZA for this piloting with the assistance of National Resilience Program (NRP) technically supported by UNDP and funded by FCDO of UK and Sida of the Sweden government. 

Under this piloting initiative, guidelines will be developed for area specific and enterprise level business continuity plan and capacity development training on BCP will be imparted to the business administrators and BEZA officials. 

Initially, the BCP will be piloted in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpanagar at Mirshari in Chattogram and Meghna Industrial Economic Zones in Narayanganj.  

Key objective of the BCP is to protect the investment in economic zones from disaster related losses and develop institutional mechanism for promoting resilience in business.
