Farmers of Sarankhola and its adjacent areas in Bagerhat has achieved bumper production of nut known as ‘Supari’. But they are unhappy as they are not getting fare price. The traders informed that local traders and farmers are incurring loss as the product is being imported from Myanmar.
Farmer of Lakurtola Chalitabunia village said that he has cultivated ‘supai’ on 15 bighs of land. He earned profit of about Tk 10 lakh annually. This year achieved better yield. Many farmers of the upazila got inspiration from him in nut cultivation.
Amraghchhri Bazar is famous for ‘supari’ trade. Sarwar Hossan, president of Sonnase Supari Business Association, Halim Boyati and Dewar Hossain told that they had been involved in the business for a long time. Price of ‘supari’ was reduced this year more than Tk 200 per kg. The size of ‘supari is smaller than the previous years. So, traders are buying it from nearby Zia Nagar of Pirojpur and Machhuya Bazar. They also imported ‘supari’ from Myanmar. So, the price of it is less and farmers are upset.
Debabrata Sarkar, Upazila Agriculture Office added that around 16 lakh maund ‘supari’ have been produced in Sarankhola. The product has been sent to different parts of the country as every house here is involved in the cultivation. He admitted the truth that this year the price is less here.
