The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) launched e-licencing system for power & energy sector companies and organisations for producing, importing, distributing and using electricity, gas and other petroleum products to ensure hassle-free service delivery by reducing time and cost, BERC official said.

From now on, entrepreneurs can apply for new license, correction or renewal of existing ones through the BERC website. If all necessary documents are attached correctly in the online application form, the applicant will got his license within 15 days. To this end, the commission inaugurated ‘E-licensing service week’ from October 1 to 7.

BERC Chairman Monowar Islam said Bangladesh had been lagging behind in the Ease of Doing Business Index prepared by the World Bank due to slow and paper-based service delivery.

Due to digitisation and simplification of government services and dynamism of different state departments, the country might improve its ranking significantly, he said.

Monowar Islam said now the applicant can apply at any time in anywhere through BERC website. The e-licencing service would help the businesses apply for new licences or renewal of the existing ones sitting in their offices and thus save their time and cost.

The businesses, however, will still have to pay the licensing fees through pay order by appearing in the office concerned in person as BERC is yet to introduce any online payment facility in their system, BERC officials said.

According to BERC, currently the applicant will have to pay license fees by Pay-order through bank. However the e-payment service will introduce in a very short time.

An official said, to apply for a new license, the applicant will have to register through BERC website. After successful login, the system dashboard will appear. The e-licensing application should be submitted with step-by-step information on the dashboard.
