Bean farming area is expanding in Jhenaidah gradually when the farmers have been reaping better. Good prices of the vegetables, application of modern agriculture technology and timely advice of the field level officials of the department of agriculture extension have been encouraging the farmers to develop their socio-economic state, said the farmers.
When this correspondent visited the vegetables plots at Badpukuria village of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila talked to a number of vegetables farmers.
Farmer Raju of the village said he brought his 24 decimals of land out of three bighas under the bean farming in the season. He started harvesting the bean in late November. He is expecting to harvest the same till early March in the season. He had received Taka 25 thousand so far and expecting another 26 to 18 thousand during the season. Net profit from the vegetable plot will ensure him Taka 35-37 thousand in four months, Raju said.
Raju’s wife who was also helping the farmer in harvesting the beans from the plot said they were lucky enough as the family members so interest in farming the bean other profitable vegetables. The family members consume huge vegetables a day and they send it to their near and dear ones. It has been helping them to fulfill their family nutrition, Raju said. Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) Zahedul Karim when contacted said the farmers of Jhenaidah are very aware and concern about their financial and other profits. They take care of their crops with the assistance of the field level staff of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) as required. They have been applying modern technology and equipments and manage the fertilizer and pesticides as per the advice of the DAE officials. He said the farmers of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila had brought their 45 hectares of land under the bean framing in the last winter season. The figure stood at 50 hectares in the current winter.
They farmers have been receiving at least six tones of the beans on each hectare. Not only that the farmers from their consciousness about the vegetables have been consuming the same as they desire at any time. It has been contributing in their family nutrition aspects, UAO Zahedul Karim said.
