BDR carnage day today

The 13th anniversary of the carnage at the then  BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in Dhaka, will be observed today.

According to the BGB press release, special prayers and milad mahfil will be organized at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana for the eternal peace of  the souls of the martyrs. 

A representative of  the President, Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, Chiefs of the three forces, Senior Secretary of the Public Security Department of the Home Ministry and Director General of BGB will place floral wreaths  at the graves at Banani military  graveyard under the management of the Bangladesh Army.

The BGB flag will be flown at half-mast at all BGB installations and all BGB members will wear black badges. Besides, special Darbar will be held in all sectors and battalion levels of BGB.

 A special prayer and milad mahfil will be held after Jumma at BGB Central Mosque, Dhaka Sector Mosque and Border Guard Hospital Mosque in Pilkhana to seek forgiveness of the souls of the martyred persons. BGB Director General Major General Md. Safinul Islam,  officials of the Home Ministry, relatives of martyred persons, all officers working in Pilkhana, junior officers and other officials will  be present.

The families of the deceased will also  place floral wreaths on their graves at Banani Military Graveyard in Dhaka at 9am on the day

On February 25-26, 2009, mutineers in the then BDR killed 74 people, including 57 army officers, at the Pilkhana headquarters of the paramilitary force.

In 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 151 BDR men and a civilian to death in the BDR carnage case, while 160 BDR men and two civilians were given life sentences and 256 others were jailed for different terms. 

Then in 2017, the High Court confirmed the death penalty of 139 people, commuted the capital punishment of eight people to life sentences and acquitted four others.

Besides, the court upheld the life imprisonment of 146 convicts and handed down different jail terms to 196.

In January 2021, nine death row convicts filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court verdict that confirmed their death sentences awarded by the trial court.
