BD seeks Cambodia’s support for Rohingya repatriation

A parliamentary delegation led by Faruk Khan MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, is visiting Cambodia to form opinion for early repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar from Bangladesh.
The foreign ministry said they met Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and sought support for early and safe repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
Faruk Khan sought Cambodia’s support for ‘early, safe and sustainable; repatriation of the Rohingyas. Cambodia is an important member country of the ASEAN, an association of Southeast Asian countries.

He also highlighted the negative consequence of the prolong stay of these Rohingya people in Bangladesh and the ASEAN countries and beyond.

Prime Minister Hun Sen expected a peaceful solution of the Rohingya crisis. He also mentioned that mutual naming of road in Phnom Pen and Dhaka after the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Late King Father of Cambodia Norodom Sihanouk would strengthen bilateral relationship.

They also discussed other bilateral issues including trade, agriculture, and tourism, among others. Addressing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as his elder sister, Prime Minister Hun Sen referred to Hasina’s visit to Cambodia in December 2017 and his visit to Bangladesh in June 2014 and mentioned that these two visits have taken the bilateral relations to a new height.

Faruk Khan mentioned that Bangladesh would organise events in Cambodia during ‘Mujib Year’ from March 2020 to March 2021, the Birth Centenary of Father of the Nation of Bangladesh so that the people of Cambodia may learn more about the glorious life of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh.

The delegation also met President of the Senate, First Vice President of the National Assembly and attended a working meeting with the Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the National Assembly of Cambodia.

In all meetings, Faruk Khan urged the Cambodian leaders to put pressure on Myanmar so that Myanmar takes their residents back.

The other members of the parliamentary delegation include Golam Faruk Khandakar Prince, Md. Abdul Majid Khan, and Nahim Razzaq.

Ambassador of Bangladesh to Cambodia resident in Bangkok Md. Nazmul Quaunine, and high officials from Cambodian government were also present in the meetings.
The Bangladesh MPs also met with the Bangladesh expatriates living in Cambodia on Sunday evening in Phnom Penh.
