United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) elected Bangladesh as Vice-President of General Assembly and Member of Credential Committee. The elections were held at the 57th conference of WTO Commission for South Asia in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu from June 3-6, according to an official press release.

Md Mahbub Ali, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh presided over the conference. Bangladesh has been elected the vice-president for one year by securing votes of all members of WTO Commission for South Asia unanimously while Iran contested the elections against Bangladesh.

This victory brings the honour upon Bangladesh to perform the duties of Vice-President at the 23rd session of the UNWTO to be held in Russia this year. Bangladesh is also currently performing as the chairman of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia.
