A Chhatra Leauge leader in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj allegedly beat his wife to death on Wednesday as she told his parent that her husband has been torturing her for dowry.
The accused was identified as Suman Mia, 28, son of Hannan Mia, resident of Sreenibasdi village in Araihazr upazila. He is a former general secretary of Government Safar Ali College Chhatra League.
The deceased is his wife Zidni Akter, 23, daughter of Siraj Miya, resident of Boillarkandi village in the upazila.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning. She was taken to Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
The family claimed that, since their marriage, Suman had been torturing his wife over dowry demands. When she informed her family about the abuse via a video call on Tuesday night, that he became enraged and beat her to death.
Enayet Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Araihazar police station, said, on in formation, they arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for autopsy. Legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
