Bangladesh Coast Guard seized illegally imported clothes from neighboring country worth around Tk 22 crore from the Meghna river in Bhola district on Tuesday. Lieutenant Commander Abdur Rahman, media officer of the Coast Guard Headquarters, gave this information on Thursday afternoon.
He said that on Tuesday at approximately 0500 hours in the morning, a special operation was conducted by BCG Base Bhola under Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone in the Meghna River near Tulatli under Sadar Upazila of Bhola district under the leadership of Staff Officer, Bhola Lieutenant M Mominul Islam.
When the movement of an engine-powered wooden boat in the expedition seemed suspicious, the boat attempted to escape at high speed when signaled to stop by a Coast Guard member.
Later, when the Coast Guard fired 04 rounds of blanks to stop the boat, the smugglers left the boat beside Char and fled. Later, FB searched the boat named Abid. 17824 pieces of various types of Indian sarees, 166 pieces of three pieces and 6442 pieces of medical items, which came to Bangladesh by evading customs duties, were seized with an estimated market value of one hundred and ninety lakhs.
He further said that the seized goods and boats were handed over to Bhola Sadar police station for further legal action.
