Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) Station in Chandpur conducted a special operation in the area adjacent to Harina Ferry Ghat at around 6am on Tuesday and arrested 3 persons with some 1,200 kg (30 maunds) of Jatka (Hilsa fries).

The operation was led by Lt. M Ashmaduzzaman on the basis of secret information. During the operation, the Jatkas were seized after searching a pick-up truck. The seized Jatkas were later distributed among local orphanages and the poor in the presence of Executive Magistrate Kazi Md Meshkatul Islam and Assistant Fisheries Officer Ashikur Rahman.

A mobile court headed by Chandpur District Executive Magistrate Kazi Mohammad Meshkatul Islam sentenced the three detainees to one year imprisonment each.

On the other hand, on the instructions of the Commander of BCG Station in Pagla Lt. M Ashmadul Islam, another operation was carried out in the area adjacent to Soarighat at around 5am on the same day. At the time, another 1,500 kg (37 maunds) of Jatka was seized by the BCG members.

The real owner of the Jatka could not be apprehended as the unscrupulous Jatka traders fled after realizing the presence of Coast Guard men during the operation.

These Jatkas were also distributed among the local orphanages and the poor in the presence of Assistant Fisheries Project Officer Md Jamal Uddin later.

Coast Guard sources said that regular operations like this will be carried out in the areas under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Coast Guard to maintain law and order, to ensure public safety, to curb robberies and to prevent Jatka killing.
