In a recent board meeting, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided against raising match fees for cricketers. Instead, they'll be implementing a performance-based bonus system. This decision follows proposals from directors Naimur Rahman Durjoy and Ismail Haydar Mallick, who favored rewarding individual achievements over a flat fee increase.
Previously, the operations department had suggested raising match fees to a maximum of Tk 2 lakh for Tests, Tk 1 lakh for ODIs, and Tk 50,000 for T20s. However, the finance and high-performance department chairs, Mallick and Durjoy respectively, proposed a performance bonus structure instead. This approach gained majority support from the board.
The new system will build upon existing win-based bonuses. However, it will introduce additional incentives for individual standout performances, such as scoring centuries or fifers. Essentially, cricketers will receive recognition for significantly impacting matches.
Shahriar Nafis, head of cricket operations, confirmed that the board has directed them to develop this performance bonus framework. They are currently finalizing the details, which will then be presented to the board for approval.
The last match fee increase for cricketers occurred in 2020. Back then, fees rose from Tk 350,000 to Tk 6 lakh for Tests,Tk 2 lakh to Tk 3 lakh for ODIs, and Tk 125,000 to Tk 2 lakh for T20s. This new system aims to move beyond a fixed fee structure and reward individual contributions on the field.
