He said that Patenga container terminal of Chittagong port is going to be opened soon. Rail line will be connected to Bay Terminal and Matarbari seaport; he is moving forward with the plan.
The State Minister was addressing the signing ceremony of the contract for the final design of the Chittagong Port Bay Terminal Construction Project at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka .
He further said under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has become a middle income country in 2021 and will be a developed country by 2041.
Speakers said the Bay Terminal is being constructed as a new terminal to increase the handling capacity of Chittagong Port. Ships can land here 24 hours a day.
There are no bends in the Bay Terminal Channel and due to adequate navigability, it will be possible to berth ships with a maximum capacity of 6,000 TEUs of 10-12 m drafts.
The agreement was signed by Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Chairman, Chittagong Port Authority, and Hwang Kyu Young, President, Kunwa Engineering and Consulting Company Limited, a joint venture, in the presence of State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.
Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Md Mostafa Kamal among others spoke on the occasion.
Initially three terminals will be constructed at Bay-Terminal. Where a 1225 m long container terminal (Container Terminal-1), a 830 m long container terminal (Container Terminal-2) and a 1500 m long multipurpose terminal will be constructed. The total length of the three terminals is 3.55 km.
The Chittagong Port Authority will be responsible for the construction and operation of the multipurpose terminal. There will be six jetties in this terminal. The Bay Terminal will have a total of 13 jetties.
The width of the channel is 800-1200 meters. To protect the Bay Terminal from hostile weather and large sea waves, a five-kilometer-long breakwater would have to be constructed on a submarine located in the area.
The Chittagong Port Authority and Kunhoa Engineering and Consulting Company Limited signed a joint venture on Tuesday to prepare a detailed master plan for the Chittagong Port Bay Terminal project and provide consultancy services for the detailed engineering design, drawing and estimation of the Multipurpose Terminal under the Chittagong Port.
The South Korean joint venture will oversee the construction of the Bay Terminal, along with a master plan for the project. It will cost 126 crore 49 lakh 73 thousand rupees. The cost of the entire Bay Terminal project is estimated at 2.1 billion.
