The puller of the battery-run rickshaw that killed a first year student of Jahangirnagar University last week was arrested.
Security officials of the university detained the puller Arju from the Gerua area near the university and brought him to the proctor's office on Sunday night.
Later, he was handed over to Ashulia police station around 2:00am for further investigation.
Among the witnesses pedestrian Nayeem and rickshaw passengers Abu Hayat and Nahid, two construction workers who were passengers in the rickshaw identified him.
JU proctor Professor Rashidul Alam said when we found him he had a mark of injury on the side of his neck. Although the puller claimed that it was an old injury a doctor confirmed that he suffered injuries somewhere very recently.
Arju, in his primary statement, denied being the rickshaw puller on the day of the accident. He claimed he was not in JU at the time and said that he had been experiencing pain in his hand for the past 15 days.
Afsana Rachi, a student of the 53rd batch of the Marketing Department at the university and a resident student of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall was hit by a battery-run rickshaw on November 19.
Afsana was initially taken to the university's medical center after the accident and later transferred to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar where the duty doctor declared her dead.
Following her tragic death, students from the 53rd batch of Jahangirnagar University held a protest march in front of the new Arts Building, demanding justice for the incident.
