Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir has been exonerated from the charge in a case filed over the suicide of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia in the capital.

After scrutinising all the relevant documents, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order on Wednesday, accepting the final report submitted by police in the case.

The court accepted the final report, saying that the police investigation was found true and there were no cogent grounds to order a further investigation in the case.

The court also rejected a no-confidence (Na-raji) petition submitted by the plaintiff of the case as the court did not found any legal grounds for accepting the petition.

Earlier on Tuesday, plaintiff Nusrat Jahan Tania’s lawyer Masud Salauddin filed the no-confidence petition before the court during the hearing on the acceptance of the final report.

After scrutinising all the documents, including the final report and the no-confidence petition, the court on Wednesday evening rejected the no-confidence petition and accepted the final report clearing the Bashundhara Group MD of the charge.

After the order, defence lawyer Tuhin Hawlader said Sayem Sobhan Anvir is a renowned businessman and Managing Director of a top business conglomerate.

“He is well regarded at home and abroad. He was implicated in the conspiracy case to tarnish the image of Sayem Sobhan Anvir and Bashundhara Group as well. Police did not find any acceptable evidence against him during a three-month investigation. Truth and justice have been established through the court’s acceptance of the final report,” he said.

Anti-state elements at home and abroad were teamed up with the plaintiff to malign Bashundhara Group and hatched a deep-rooted conspiracy to harass its MD, he said.

“Those, who do not want the country’s democracy and development, have joined hands and have been spreading rumours on the social media,” he said.

In its order, the court observed that it has thoroughly analysed the final report and rejected the no-confidence petition for having no legal grounds.

Lawyers present in the court said that it is proved that the Bashundhara Group MD who was implicated in the case, was not involved in the incident at all and there was no instigation to the suicide.

As per the final report, the IO analysed the evidence, autopsy report and forensic report during the investigation. He took statement of the flat owner and other witnesses.

But, he did not get any direct or indirect evidence of abetment of suicide alleged by the plaintiff. Even, the plaintiff failed to produce any evidence before the IO in favour of her claim.

On July 19, Gulshan police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abul Hasan, also investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the final report as they have found no evidence of Sayem Sobhan Anvir’s abetment of Munia’s suicide during the investigation in the case.

The IO in the final report mentioned that the man accused of instigating Munia’s suicide was not found involved in the case at all and no abetment of her suicide occurred.

As a result, Munia’s sister Nusrat Tania’s allegations against the Bashundhara Group MD have been proved false and baseless.

Earlier on April 26, Munia committed suicide at a rented flat in the capital’s Gulshan area. Police recovered the body of the girl hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom.

Shortly after Munia’s death, her elder sister Nusrat Jahan Tania filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on a charge of abetment of her sister’s suicide. She accused the lone person in the case.

The final report of police noted that Nusrat filed the case purposefully from the very beginning. It has also been alleged that she resorted to many deceptions while filing the lawsuit.

The police investigation has revealed that Nusrat raised the malicious and fraudulent allegations to humiliate a particular person.

During the day of incidence, Nusrat along with some lawyers and activists of different political parties went to Gulshan Police Station by a luxury jeep. They created huge pressure on police and forced them to record a suicide abetment case against the Bashundhara Group MD without any primary investigation.

Her aides started delivering provoking statements implicating the Bashundhara Group MD and started a media trial against him before proving the allegation.

Some screenshots of chatting of Munia went viral. That showed that Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun wrote to Munia that if you do something, Bashundhara Group will be vanished.

Apart from this, some chatting of Munia and Nusrat with different people revealed the proof of conspiracy against the Bashundhara Group.

Meanwhile, Munia’s elder brother Ashiqur Rahman Sabuj filed a murder case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Court on May 2 against Whip Shamsul Haque Chowdhury’s son Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun.

Taking cognisance of the case, the court ordered the police not to start the investigation until the completion of the suicide abetment case.
