Bari mango cultivation has achieved incredible success at Baganchra village in Sharsha Upazila of Jashore.
One of the successful farmers is Noor Islam Sardar, resident of Pipragachi village under Baganchra Union of Sharsha Upazila.
Noor Islam Sardar has been associated with nursery work for the past 23 years. He also experienced success in the cultivation of 11 varieties of mangoes.
Earlier, he worked as a laborer in different nurseries. Then he built a fruit nursery on a piece of land beside his house. Being associated with the nursery, he used to collect newly developed fruit seedlings.
In 2018, he collected 11 new varieties of mango seedlings from Bangladesh Mango Research Center, Chapainawabganj.
He produced two thousand and two hundred seedlings from the branches of trees produced in the first harvest from those collected seedlings. Later in 2019, he took lease of six Bighas of land for ten years.
He planted his own produced mango saplings on three Bighas of his own land and six Bighas on other lands.
Out of this, Bari 11 variety has been cultivated in six Bighas of land and Katiman mango in three Bighas of land.
After two years of planting, the garden begins to bear fruit. From April this year, Noor Islam has started picking mangoes from his garden.
Noor Islam said that about thirty-five tons of mangoes were cultivated on per Bigha of land.
Each kg of mango is being sold from the orchard at the rate of Tk 400.
The mango is very sweet and delicious. People like the early variety mango. Currently, Noor Islam's income from one Bigha of land is Taka 56,000 in one season. Mango traders from different parts of the country are collecting mangoes from him.
He is sending mangoes and mango seedlings across the country through courier service.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Deepak Kumar said mango production is a risky business. So, I always monitor the mango garden of Noor Islam, and advise him. He also said that farmers like Noor Islam are our pride. If anyone wants to produce new fruits and crops, we will always support them.
