BARI conducting research on 211 crops

The internal research review & planning workshop 2023 of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was inaugurated on Sunday (July 30, 2023) at the Kazi Badrudduza Auditorium of the institute in Gazipur. 

This workshop has been organized for the purpose of evaluating all the research programs undertaken in the last year 2022-2023 and formulating the research program for the next year 2023-2024 in the light of these experiences. 

Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) is currently conducting research activities on 211 crops. A total of 1,290 technologies including 650 high yielding, disease resistant and various adverse environment resistant varieties and 640 other production technologies have been developed by BARI, says a press release of BARI. 

As a result of these technological innovations, the production of oilseeds, pulses, potatoes, wheat, vegetables, spices and fruits has increased tremendously in the country. 

The main objective of this workshop is to verify the suitability of these technologies and to take up the program of technology innovation according to the current demand of the country. The technical sessions of the workshop will be held regularly from 01 August 2023 onwards.

Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Wahida Akter attended the inaugural ceremony of the workshop as the chief guest with Director General of BARI Dr. Debasish Sarker in the chair.

Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) Abdullah Sazzad, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Bokhtiar, Director General of Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Badal Chandra Biswas, Director General of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Dr. Md. Shahjahan Kabir, Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Dr. Mirza Mofazzal Islam and Director General of National Agriculture Training Academy  Mr. Mahmudul Hasan were present as special guests.

BARI Director (Support & Services) Dr. Ferdouse Islam presented the welcome address, while Director (Research) Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond gave a presentation on the research activities and achievements of BARI. 

Joint Secretary (Research Wing) of the Ministry of Agriculture Rehana Yasmin, Joint Secretary (Research Wing) Dr. Sabina Yesmin, BARI Director (Planning & Evaluation) Dr. Dilwar Ahmed Choudhury, Director (Oilseed Research) Dr. Md.Tariqul Islam, Director (Tuber Crops Research Center) Dr. Sohela Akhter, Director (Horticulture) Dr. Gobinda Chandra Biswas and Director (Pulse Research Center) Dr. Md. Mohi uddin were also present on the occasion. Agricultural experts, scientists, representatives from government, non-government and international organizations, BARI scientists and officers were, among others, participated in the inaugural session.
