Chief of the Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed has said that preparations for the construction of barbed wire fencing surrounding the Rohingya camp is going on in full swing. The construction of pillars will be erected around the camp for fixing the barbed wire was nearing completion. Initially work on installing boundary pillars has begun, he added.
The Army chief said these while he was talking to journalists following the function of awarding of Regimental Colour to unit-6 at Ramu Cantonment in Cox's Bazaar on Sunday.
General Aziz Ahmed said, “Myanmar is our neighbour and we always want a good relation with our neighbours. It is also a part of our national policy. I am visiting Myanmar next month to develop our relationship and to discuss various issues. Many issues will come up and we may talk about the Rohingya issue but whatever happens, it'll be in the interest of Bangladesh.”
In response to a query, the Army chief said, there are no barbed wire fencing along the frontiers with India and Myanmar not even the frontier road. The present government has approved to construct 287-kilometre of frontier road along Myanmar border. The plan is at the final stage. The contractors for the construction works will be appointed soon.
General Aziz Ahmed mentioned, in addition to ensuring the sovereignty of the country, the armed forces were contributing to developing important socio-economic and infrastructural development works along with the countering of the natural and man-made disasters. In order to safeguard the unity of the motherland and for any national requirement, Bangladesh Army is always ready to make the highest sacrifice, he added.
The Army chief arrived at Ramu Cantonment at 11-30 am. Major General Main Ullah Chowdhury, GOC of 10 Infantry division of Ramu greeted him to attend as the chief guest at the function of awarding regimental colours to 6,9 and 27 Field Regiment Artillery, 6 Engineer Battalion and 13 and 14 Infantry regiments.
Among others, the function, was attended, by Alhaj Saimum Sarwar Kamol MP, Ashek Ullah Rafique MP, Alhaj Jafar Alam MP, seven former chief of army staff and high ranking army and the civil officials.
