Bangladeshi woman dies in Kolkata guest house fire

An elderly Bangladeshi woman died and another person received injuries in a fire that broke out at a guest house in Kolkata, West Bengal on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Samimatul Aros (60), wife of Mosharraf from Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj district, sources at Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata said quoting Kolkata Police.

When contacted Ranjan Sen, First Secretary (Press) to the mission told BSS that the fire broke out around 4 am at Rahbar Guest House on Mirza Ghalib Street at New Market police station in Kolkata.

He said three guests received burn injuries and rest 16 were rescued by Kolkata police after the fire.

Samimatul, who came to Kolkata under medical visa, died after being taken to the government-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, police said in a press release.

Another Bangladeshi, who received burn injuries mainly on his face, head and chest, is identified as Mahbub Alam (42) of Char Khagata in Mehendiganj under Barishal district.

He is now undergoing treatment at Kolkata Medical College Hospital with 25 percent burn injuries on his face, head and chest, Sen said.

Police however, suspecting that the fire was originated from electric short circuit of AC.

Counsellor (Consular) of Bangladesh Deputy High Commission Md. Bashir Uddin has visited the Kolkata Medical College Hospital to see the condition of the injured person.

The autopsy of the deceased has been done and formalities are underway to send back the body to Bangladesh as early as possible.

"Our mission is in constant touch with the relatives of the deceased and the injured...we will do whatever needs with the consultation of the deceased family as soon as possible", Sen said.
