World Bank will be providing $100m loan to Bangladesh to ensure more people’s access to improved water supply and sanitation system in 30 municipalities. The programme will also improve the water delivery systems and sanitation services.

We welcome this initiative to improve the quality of life of the citizens of the country. The project titled ‘Municipal Water Supply and Sanitation Project’ will give around 6 lakh people living in rural towns access to safe piped water.

According to a report by the World Bank, even though 87 percent households have access to various improved water sources, only 10 percent of people in the country have access to piped water supply. The project will install water infrastructures, including water treatment facility, water storage, transmission and distribution pipe network, house connections including meters and others.

The initiative is sure to go a long

way in improving public health, as risk of

water-borne diseases will be reduced manifold

Undoubtedly, access to clean and safe water supply is a key element in improving the quality of life. The initiative is sure to go a long way in improving public health, as risk of water-borne diseases will be reduced manifold. Improved sanitation of water will also reduce infant and child mortality rates.

The current state of sanitation and water supply for people living in semi-urban and rural areas must be improved. The implementation of this project is a step in the right direction. The government must ensure that the funding is allocated accordingly.

For such a big project to be implemented smoothly, separate supervisory bodies should be formed and the overseeing of the different localities should be assigned accordingly.

Outside of the 30 chosen municipalities under this project, isolated areas should be focused on next to ensure water supply to people living there. Slum dwellers in the cities of the country should also be provided with clean water supply and sanitation system to improve their lives.
