In the upcoming 28th World Climate Change Conference (COP28), Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin expressed confidence that the Bangladesh delegation would play a pivotal and influential role at the conference.
The Minister express optimism that the delegation’s commitment to actively engage in issue-based discussions, representing the concerns of least developed countries and those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Speaking at an exchange meeting with journalists from the Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Minister Shahab Uddin highlighted the key priorities for Bangladesh at COP28.
These include pushing for the operationalization of the ‘Loss and Damage Fund,’ establishing detailed arrangements for its implementation, framing a Global Goals on Adaptation framework, ensuring $100 billion per year by 2025 from developed nations to combat climate change in developing countries, and finalizing the definition of climate finance. The Minister emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment to playing a strong role in doubling adaptation financing.
Minister Shahab Uddin said that a comprehensive position paper, incorporating the insights of prominent climate experts and relevant ministries, has been prepared to highlight Bangladesh’s stance at COP28. As with previous conferences, Bangladesh has set up a 152-square-meter pavilion and organized various side events to showcase its efforts and contributions.
Under the guidance of Kawsar Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum, key figures present at the meeting included Deputy Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Ministry Begum HabibunNahar, Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Environment and Climate Change) Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Bangladesh Climate Change Journalists Forum General Secretary Motahar Hossain, Joint General Secretary MasudulHaque, and Senior Journalist Nikhil Chandra Bhadra.
