A total of 123 members of the Myanmar Army and Border Guard Police (BGP) who sought refuge in Bangladesh were sent back to their country on Sunday.
They were sent back to their country from the Nuniar Chara BIWTA in Cox's Bazar via a ship that arrived from Myanmar.
Along with that, 85 Bangladeshi citizens who were released from prison in Myanmar were handed over in Cox's Bazar.
The handover process was carried out by Brigadier General Imrul Hasan, the regional commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox's Bazar, along with the BGB sector commander and senior officials from the district and police administration. Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Md Rahat Bin Qutub, was present on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh to oversee the entire process.
A meeting was held at noon at the BIWTA jetty area in Cox's Bazar between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other Bangladeshi officials and BGP, as well as the officials of the Myanmar Embassy Bangladesh, who came to receive the Myanmar BGP and army members. Following the meeting, the handover process of the Myanmar soldiers and BGP members was completed.
Sources from the police and district administration said a ship of the Myanmar Navy, named UMS Chindwin, departed from Sittwe port on Saturday, carrying 85 Bangladeshi citizens who were released from Myanmar's prison, heading towards Cox's Bazar. The ship arrived at the BIWTA jetty in Cox's Bazar on Sunday morning. The 123 members of the Myanmar Army and BGP returned to Myanmar on the same ship.
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin said among the 123 individuals, 15 are army personnel, while the remaining are members of the BGP. He also mentioned that in previous rounds, 752 members of the BGP and the Myanmar Army who sought refuge in Bangladesh have already been sent back to Myanmar.
