Bangladesh self-reliant in food now: Agro Minister

“Bangladesh today is full of food and no one in the country starves - this is the biggest achievement in 50 years of victory.”

Agriculture Minister Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque stating that, said Bangladesh was known as a country of food shortage. After independence, there was not enough food for 60 million people. And now there is no shortage of food in the country of about 160 million people.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting and drama programme organized by the Ministry of Agriculture on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Independence at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

The Minister said that soon after independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took groundbreaking steps for development of agriculture and attainment of self-sufficiency in food. He started the agricultural revolution in the country. Based on that foundation, the adoption and implementation of the agro-friendly policy of the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resulted in wonderful success in agriculture today. After independence, Bangladesh was called a bottomless basket, it was said that Bangladesh would not survive as an independent country or even if it did, it would be dependent forever, it has been proved wrong today. This is the greatest achievement of Bangladesh that it surpass many obstacle and reached this level.

Former Minister for Culture and eminent cultural figure Asaduzzaman Noor MP said, “I am a man from femine area. I saw that even in 2004 people in my area died without eating. Today there is no femine in that area, the word manga is not even pronounced. In the future it will only be found in the dictionary. This is the success of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.

Speaking as the special guest, retired Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik said that a court in Bangladesh had declared Zia as a cold-headed murderer. The United States had a road named after Zia, after which the government of that country changed its name. Ziaur Rahman started a culture of impunity in this country, Later, the BNP government maintained that culture.

Md Mesbahul Islam, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture presided over the function. Additional Secretary of the Ministry Wahida Akhter gave welcome speech. At the end of the discussion, a play on the war of liberation written by Syed Shamsul Haque was staged.
