Bangladesh sees highest single-day deaths

Bangladesh on Wednesday registered record number of 1162 new cases of coronavirus and 19 deaths in a day from Covid-19.
With that, the number of total cases surged to 17822 and deaths 269.

In the last 24 hours till 8am of Wednesday, 214 more patients were released from hospitals taking the total tally of recoveries to 3361.

Additional director general for health Prof Nasima Sultana in the daily briefing said they had tested 7900 samples in 41 laboratories across Bangladesh during the period.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus case on March 8 while the first death on March 18 last.
Among the dead patients, 12 are male and seven female. 13 of them died at different hospitals in Dhaka city, three in Chattogram Division and one each in Narayanganj, Khulna and Narail, Prof Nasima said.

Ten of the deceased were aged above 60, seven belong to age group of 51-60 and one is under ten.

Currently, 45,221 people are quarantined across the country – including 2,558 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 182,361 people have completed their quarantine course.

The authorities placed 150 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 3,435 after 1,332 left.

The country is capable of accommodating 8,634 people at 601 isolation wards and 31,165 people at 617 institutional quarantine facilities.

The global death tally from coronavirus pandemic reached 292,816 as of Wednesday morning.

Since the virus was first reported in China in December last year, it has so far infected 4,340,058 people globally, according to Worldometer. So far, 1,602,155 people have recovered from COVID-19.

The virus is affecting 212 countries and territories around the world and two international conveyances.
