Bangladesh’s reelection to UNHRC proves BNP propaganda false: Hasan

As Bangladesh has been re-elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council by a large vote, various propaganda by BNP and anti-nationalists have been proved false, said Information Minister and Joint General Secretary of Awami League Dr. Hasan Mahmud.

Bangladesh was elected a member of the Human Rights Council for the fifth time in this vote held at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday for the three-year period from 2023 to 2025 by getting 160 votes out of 189 votes. Bangladesh was previously elected a member of this 47-member council in 2006, 2009, 2014 and 2018.

During an exchange of views with journalists in the secretariat meeting room of the ministry on Wednesday afternoon, he said, 'Bangladesh has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council after receiving the maximum 160 votes in the Asia Pacific region. As you know, BNP and some individuals and certain organizations are continuously spreading false propaganda that human rights are being violated in Bangladesh. They were trying to create confusion by sending wrong information data to different countries of the world and in that context Bangladesh was elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council by getting the highest number of votes. This proves that the propaganda they have been doing about the human rights situation in Bangladesh, the way they have tried to divide the foreigners, is futile and ineffective. Rather, it has been proved that the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on the right track.

The minister said, "Actually, the highest violation of human rights occurred in Bangladesh when Ziaur Rahman killed thousands of army officers and soldiers without trial while in power. There have also been cases where the execution was carried out first, the trial verdict followed. And these are documented. Thousands of Bangladesh Awami League leaders and activists were tortured and killed during Zia's tenure.

"Begum Khaleda Zia did not fall short, Khaleda Zia's government was involved in the grenade attack on August 21, the killing of our former finance minister Kibria, Ahsan Ullah Master, Manzoor Imam of Khulna, Humayun Kabir Balu and many journalists and they did not do any justice to them," he said. Hasan Mahmud. He said, 'In the year 2013-14-15, the way people were burnt alive and there was a gross violation of human rights, we are taking them to the world court. The organization of the families of those who were killed by Ziaur Rahman, 'Mayer Kanna', is holding a human chain in different parts of the country, including Dhaka-Chittagong, demanding justice. I want to know what BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Sahib will respond to this.

When journalists asked about Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International's criticism of the country's human rights situation, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting said, "Amnesty International's Irene Khan is the cousin of Tariq Rahman's wife." When he makes a statement on behalf of Amnesty International and on the other hand, when there is a Bayon, when the statement comes from there, and many statements are sold, those statements have no value.

In response to questions about the contemporary politics of BNP. Hasan said, "If BNP tries to create chaos in the name of sectional assembly, then the government will take appropriate measures for the security of the people and if the people form resistance, our party will also be with us." And if any of the five parliamentarians of BNP resigns, there will be a by-election.

In response to BNP's criticism of electricity supply, Minister Hasan said, "BNP has only provided poles instead of electricity." And when we formed the government in 2009, only 40 percent of people in the country got electricity, not always, electricity came intermittently. Today hundred percent of people are coming under electricity facility. So when BNP talks like this, not only people but also Hanuman laughs.'

After the discussion, Awami League joint general secretary Dr. Hasan addressed the conference of Dinajpur Municipality and Sadar Upazila Awami League through virtual means.
