The nationwide celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Birth Centenary coinciding with the Golden Jubilee of independence of Bangladesh began with a world record.

The country has set the world record for a giant portrait of Bangabandhu. The massive portrait was completed on March 9 at Sherpur in Bogura. Nearly 150 people completed the 400-meter-long portrait by planting purple and green rice on 13 hectares of paddy fields in Bogura, nearly 196 kilometers from the capital Dhaka.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognised the crop-field portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the largest in its field on March 16, just hours before beginning of nationwide celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh and 101st birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujib.

AFM Bahauddin Nasim, joint general secretary of Awami League and also the conveyor of “Shasyachitre Bangabandhu Jatiya Parishad”, said that the representatives of Guinness World Records have given their confirmation on March 16. The Guinness World Records authorities have already declared it on their website, he added.

He also said, “We have taken the land on lease for seven months to build the unique portrait on the auspicious occasion of his birth centenary and the golden jubilee of our independence.”

Muntasir Mamoon, a historian and Dhaka University professor, said, “Bangabandhu was born in a middle-class farming family. So, on his birth centenary, the country’s farmers portrayed his image through the crops in the field. There is no better way to convey our respects to the great leader.”

According to the website: “The largest crop field mosaic (image) is 119,430.273sqm (1,285,536.75sqft) and was achieved by AFM Bahauddin Nasim and KSM Mostafizur Rahman in an attempt organised by National AgriCare Import and Export Ltd (all Bangladesh) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 9 March 2021.”

“The crop mosaic depicts Father of the Nation of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and was to commemorate the 100 year anniversary on 17th March,” it said.
