It is gratifying to note that out of the 27 green industrial establishments in the world that are ranked in the top ten, 14 are garment and textile factories in Bangladesh. This credit goes to the entrepreneurs who have taken an extraordinary interest in building eco-friendly factories. Their endeavours have created a favourable spot for the country in the global arena.

Despite customers seldom inquiring about such aspects of production, the business owners have taken this initiative to create eco-friendly factories of their own accord. This will be beneficial to creating a green environment for the factory employees. As such, this should not be restricted to only RMG sector but it should proliferate also to other sectors as well. As per a report published in this daily, Bangladesh is the second top readymade garments (RMG) exporting country with the highest number of green RMG factories in the world. This augurs well as it provides a favourable image of the country to the foreign customers. We congratulate the owners of these factories and thank the workers who are toiling endlessly. It is their efforts and good will that have led to this success in protecting the environment.

This line of thought also coincides with the sustainable environmental development objective that is sought after by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It is also laudable that Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) were under pressure by entrepreneurs on various issues. The initiative of setting up environment-friendly factories was amongst the top focus during the post-Rana-Plaza collapse time. Since then Bangladesh’s RMG has improved towards creating green manufacturing plants that have sufficiently managed to be impactful.

Time has come to rectify the distorted image of the country’s RMG sector left by Tazreen Fashions and Rana Plaza factory incidents. The process of upgrading standards of workplace environment in every other sector of the country should start right now. In return for these private achievements, the authorities concerned should provide the necessary support to garner better result in the industrial sector of the country.
