Bangladesh recorded 8,364 new Covid-19 infections till 8am Monday, breaking the previous record of single-day infection. Last on 7 April, 7,626 people contracted the virus. The total number of people infected has reached 8,96,770, with the new cases.
This is the highest number of infections recorded in the span of a single day since 8 March 2020, when the first case of coronavirus was detected.
The country registered 104 more deaths from Covid-19 in the meantime, taking the death toll to 14,276, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.
The death rate now stands at 1.59 percent in the country, added the release.
The country recorded 119 deaths and 5,268 infections on Sunday.
The current positivity rate stands at 23.86 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 13.71 percent.
Among the 104 deceased, 68 were men, and 36 were women. Of the victims, 97 died in different hospitals across the country while seven died at home.
35 of the deceased were from the Khulna division, 27 from Dhaka, 19 from Chattogram, nine from Rangpur, seven from Rajshahi, five from Mymensingh and two were from Barisal division.
A total of 35,059 samples were tested across the country till 8am Monday.
During this period 3,570 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 8,07,673 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 90.06 percent.
As of Monday, 3,940,426 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 181,924,545 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.
Covid-19 deaths and infections have been on an upward trend in the last few days, especially in the border districts. The government has announced a countrywide complete lockdown from July 1 to contain the spread of coronavirus.
