Bangladesh has clinched the second spot in highest freshwater fish producing countries in the world. This remarkable achievement has been made possible as a result of the government’s tireless efforts to protect fish sanctuaries, imposing restriction on fishing for a certain period, and releasing fish fry in water bodies.

Various exhibitions and training programmes carried out by the government, as well as incentives in fish farming inspired many youths to get involved in aquaculture. Utilising the numerous water-bodies as well as mobilising the youth force of the country has become a boon for the country.

Bangladesh has now secured the second place in the growth of freshwater fish production, according to ‘The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture-2020’ prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN). Bangladesh ranks fifth in fish cultivation in the world while China and India are in the first and second place respectively.

Bangladesh has achieved this feat by using modern technologies which have helped farmers produce more freshwater fishes. At the same time, some scientific popular methods like Biofloc, and others are attracting young people to involve in fish production due to its high return.

The government is putting emphasis on developing methods to increase production and saving local species of fish from extinction. Due to its continuous efforts, the fish production has increased by 50 percent in the last 11 years.

Further training programmes should be designed to attract young entrepreneurs to the sector. The government must continue to provide support to ensure steady growth of fish production. Awareness campaigns to keep natural resources, particularly water bodies free of pollution must be carried

out as well.
