Bangladesh ponder ‘green tops’ at home when cricket resumes

Bangladesh selector Habibul Bashar feels that green-tops will be "priority" in the country once cricket resumes after the pandemic.

With ball-shining with saliva banned temporarily from the game, Bashar feels that leaving a fair amount of grass on the wicket will help to keep the balance between bat and ball, reports Cricbuzz.

"Our curators always point to lack of rest for the wickets whenever we look for green tops," Bashar said. "But this time round, that won't be the case as the pitches have gotten sufficient rest.

I feel green top wickets will be a priority just to make sure our pacers have something to work with, more so in the longer version after all the ban on saliva. Otherwise, the game will be very much dominated by the batsmen."

BCB curator of Khulna venue Zahid Reza Babu told Cricbuzz that this Covid-19 break can help them prepare grassy wickets at some venues, if not everywhere.

But how long the wickets will sustain the grass in Bangladesh's heat is uncertain, but even a first-session launch pad for the fast bowlers will go a long way in redefining the management's faith in fast bowling at home.

Bangladesh pace bowling coach Ottis Gibson has in the past insisted on the need to develop pacers, even if that meant playing them in more numbers at home on a regular basis.

"I have been very impressed with some of the guys in Bangladesh -- both in BPL and in the international teams," Ottis has said. "I haven't seen Khaled bowl much.

He has been injured. I have been told he can touch 130-140 kmph. Taskin, Ebadat can touch 140. Mustafizur has had his injury problems but he can touch 140.

I believe Hasan Mahmud too has got a great future in the game. I believe he will also touch 140. So there are five guys who can bowl 140. When they understand what it takes to do that in terms of fitness, I believe they got the potential to do that.

"But we need the intent to do it. And the conditions will also have to allow and inspire them to do it. I think we need to play more in Sylhet as it has more grass on the wicket.

It will allow Bangladesh to play three fast bowlers as opposed to playing just the two fast bowlers and three spinners. It's okay to win games with spinners but when you go away and play on seam-friendly wickets, we must have to give them the opportunity to get confidence.

"The guys I have mentioned who can touch 140 have got the control. What they are lacking is that they don't get to play enough. They just bowl one spell and then the spinners are on.

Fast bowlers don't get to bowl even 20 overs in the longer version of the game in Bangladesh, and that's what's lacking. That's something BCB need to look at to develop fast bowlers.

You have guys with good quality but you don't have the experience. As soon as you put them under pressure in international cricket they certainly lack the experience."
