‘Bangladesh Police playing vital role in world peace’

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that Bangladesh Police has been playing an important role with sincerity, dedication and professionalism at the United Nations peacekeeping missions to establish peace in war-torn and conflicted countries. 

The Home boss said this this while inaugurating the United Nations Police Day-2022 (UNPOL Day-2022) at Hotel Sonargaon in the city on Sunday.

Five hundred members of Bangladesh Police as United Nations Police' have earned great appreciation from the world by performing their duties with professionalism in various peacekeeping missions around the globe. Bangladesh's respect and dignity have increased for their unique contribution. 

Mentioning that Bangladesh is currently the top contributing country in sending women police to peacekeeping missions, he said adding “Our women peacekeepers are working as the main driving force in reducing gender-based violence and conflict, especially in providing security to women and children”. 

The Home Minister also expressed the hope that if more members of the Bangladesh Police are deployed in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission, they will be able to demonstrate their skills to the service of the world community.

IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said, "Bangladesh Police's heroic members have won praise of the world with their professionalism, sincerity and honesty. He said, especially our women policemen have been able to prove themselves as iconic peacekeepers”.

 IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun said, “The great architect of our freedom, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman expressed his desire to unite with the people of the world to ensure peace and cooperation in the world. In 1989, the glorious march of the Bangladesh Police in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission to establish global peace, bearing the spirit of Bangabandhu. 

The IGP pointed out that there is a need for greater participation of the Bangladesh Police at the decision-making body at the UN headquarters and peacekeeping missions. He expressed his sincere thanks to the organizers for choosing Bangladesh as the venue for UNPOL Day-2022. 

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun also said, “In keeping with the specific requirements of the peacekeeping mission, we attach utmost importance to enhancing the pre-deployment capabilities of our policemen through modern equipment and advanced training. Our SWAT,Canine Squad, naval and forensic units are capable of making significant contributions to UN peacekeeping missions also”.

Senior Secretary of Public Security Division Md Akhtar Hossain, Acting Adviser of Police Division of the United Nations Jun Tan, Head of the Integrated Training Service at the United Nations Headquarters Mark Pedersen, Police Chair of the IAPTC Executive Committee Brigadier General Giovanni Barbano and Additional IGP Md Atoqul Islam spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, the UNPOL Day was organised in New Zealand and Peru respectively in 2018 and 2019 just before the annual conference of the International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres (IAPTC).

This year the 26th annual conference of IAPTC will be held from October 31 to November 4 at Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training (BIPSOT), Gazipur.
