Bangladesh produces 80 percent of the world’s hilsa fish, said Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim.
The minister said, “Bangladesh has received the GI Certificate of hilsa. Bangladesh's top position in hilsa production in the world has been achieved due to the joint efforts of all and various timely steps taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of Jatka Conservation Week-2022 held at the Government Louhajang College ground in Munshiganj, joining the programme virtually.
He said that hilsa is our national asset and protecting this asset is not only an official duty but also a moral duty.
“If the trend of 80 percent hilsa production in the world is not maintained by protecting these resources, our top position in hilsa production will be hampered. Therefore, joint cooperation is a must in the conservation of jatka (hilsa fry),” he added.
SM Rezaul Karim further said that if the procurement of jatka is
not stopped, no more hilsa will be left in future.
“The main objective of jatka conservation week is to ensure that no one procures or markets hilsa fish smaller than the instructed size. Our goal is for fishermen to catch hilsa fish, people to get the opportunity to eat fish. However, that should not happen before the hilsa fish reaches maturity,” he added.
The Fisheries and Livestock Minister said that strict action would be taken against those who are directly and indirectly involved in catching jatka.
He said, “Stern action will be taken against those involved in catching jatka and who make and use illegal current nets. Mobile court drives will be conducted in the markets. Whoever will bring jatka will have to face the punishment under law. The opportunity to waste hilsa resources cannot be given to any miscreant.”
He further said that Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has been providing patronage in various ways including increasing the production of hilsa by providing sanctuaries and opportunities for scientific research.
“VGF assistance and alternative employment opportunities are being provided to those involved in fish catching so that they do not face loss during the ban on catching mother hilsa and jatka. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants no one to face loss due to the tough stance taken for the prosperity of hilsa. Support for fishermen will continue and will increase in the future,” he added.
