The launch of the metro rail service in Dhaka city has generated enormous enthusiasm among people of the country, particularly the city dwellers, who suffer like anything while commuting in the capital. The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina deserves plaudits for ending the people’s long longing for a transport system that will save them from the terrible traffic congestion which eats up a large portion of their hours. No, metro rail is nothing new; the world’s first metro was launched in London around 160 years ago and now 61 countries boast metro systems. But for Bangladeshis, having the opportunity to enjoy metro rides in their own land is no less rapturous than winning a war. Now we all – from the users to operators – should act in a way that the metro maintains the condition and status it is now enjoying; we should give the highest attention to its maintenance and viable operation.

Everyone has to maintain the

 immaculate condition and

pristine look the metro was

 in on its opening day

We, Bangladeshis, have all bad examples of spoiling by ourselves public property like the property of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation, Bangladesh Railway and Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation. The popularity of these state-run service providers is diminishing with each passing day in keeping with the decline in their ability to cater to people’s needs. Private operators outperform their public sector competitors in most fields, proving the investment of hard-earned public money was a bad investment. The authorities of the public sector operators are to blame the most for this condition. And the users cannot fully avoid the blame as they also contribute to the sorry state of public property. However, we cannot afford to spoil the metro rail. Everyone has to use it with the same care they maintain while using their own property; they have to maintain the immaculate condition and pristine look the metro was in on its opening day. And the authorities should operate the metro in a way that commuters feel comfortable using it. Sustainable operations of this line will certainly create the ground for launching other metro lines.
